In the spring of 2026, the UAlberta Engineers in Action Chapter, in collaboration with the University of Toronto and UBC Okanagan chapters, constructed a suspended pedestrian footbridge in the Aguas Calientes community, located in Peru’s Acora District. Inaccessible for 90-120 days a year due to flooding on the Rio Blanco, 200 people in nearby communities would consistently lose access to their only nearby school, health centre, and market. Due to their inability to access year-round education, 4 in 5 children have had to move from their community. The river, when passable, remained dangerous with eight people injured in accidents over the past three years alongside cases of animals being killed while crossing. This 65.5-meter bridge, our longest yet, provides safe year-round access, significantly improving the quality of life for three hundred people in the surrounding area. Working alongside the local community and our mentors allowed us both to construct the bridge in a timely manner and deeply involve ourselves in every aspect of an engineering project, through both design and construction. This project exemplifies our vision of building connections to everyone, no matter the distance.
